I wanted to explain the intention behind The Art of Letting Go, what to expect, and why I migrated some of you from a previous email list.
Over the last few months I’ve done a few public readings of short prose and poetry, and I’ve had a tremendous amount of positive feedback and encouragement. The highest compliment I got was from a friend who attended my last reading who told me, “I didn’t realize you’re so funny.” :)
On this Substack, there’s gonna be more activity in these first few weeks*, as I populate this page with a few finished pieces from the last year, but then I’ll likely shift to posting more irregularly.
*Btw if getting a higher frequency of emails from me is not your thing, feel free to unsubscribe. No hard feelings!
I’ve simultaneously wanted to divest from Instagram (and other short-attention-span platforms) where I publish most of my writing/photography—to not be bound by Meta’s algorithms, word-count limits, and censorship. Also, you shouldn’t have to show your face or ass cards off to get people to pay attention to your art. But don’t worry that doesn’t mean I’ll never post a thirst trap again! Just probably not here. Unless…
For those of you who know nothing about me. Hi, my name’s Lucia Honey (that’s actually my legal name). I’m a 34 y/o visual artist, writer, and musician originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia but have lived in New Orleans for 11 years now—which feels more like home than any other place I’ve known.
I’m a sagittarius and former drag noise diva; sags like to travel and overbook our lives, but I’m learning to practice grounding. I’m growing basil in my kitchen, and she’s taking off!
I write about growing up in a chaotic household, queer relationships during the apocalypse, and the serendipity of embracing the unknown. This year, I started foraging and love to cook, so I’ll dabble in a foodish blog post or two.
I’ve been on a journey trying to mend generational wounds, so my ancestors have creeped into my storytelling in recent years. I’m mostly Sicilian, a quarter Czech, and a quarter Irish/Swedish. On that note, I’m currently in postproduction for a documentary I’ve been shooting on-location in Sicily. More on that when the time is right. I non-natively speak Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian all of which have impacted how I use language.
For the past four years I’ve social media managed for a nonprofit art center in New Orleans called Material Institute. Check them out on Insta if you fancy (I run the account!).
Working full time, I struggle to find space for my personal art practice (as I write this at 2am), but I can’t deny that it’s nice to be situated in a creative hub of the city, and I’ve been able to hone photography, graphic design, copywriting, video editing, and team-building skills. But enough about moi.
Here’s what you can expect from The Art of Letting Go:
Heartfelt true stories with unintentionally-jk-sometimes-intentionally embellished details (Mom always said I had a big imagination)
Political and philosophical musings
Original photography
Eventually, I might muster up courage to post some straight-up fiction or like talk about my process. Idk I’m down to experiment
Stories with erotic elements and taboo subjects
Sad things disguised as jokes
Cryptic poetic sentences. Sue me
Quite literally the art of acknowledging the past in order to move on and learn from it
Thanks for reading this far—over and out:
Your friendly neighborhood Lucia Honey.
